This is the one of the heaviest stories I've read in years. A chilling reminder of how systemic practices perpetuate race and class inequity in the U.S. 
 
First, you have thousands of poor folks of color poisoned by lead paint in places like Baltimore (including, it should be noted, Freddie Gray), thanks to the indifference of landlords, local housing authorities and elected officials, going back decades. This lead then impairs cognitive development (and is also correlated highly with criminal acting out by the way). 

Then when lawsuits finally seek to provide some measure of relief to the victims, companies swoop in and offer buy-outs of the victims' structured settlements, for pennies on the dollar, even though the terms of the agreements are both hard to understand (especially when cognitively impaired) and almost impossible for a desperately poor person to resist. When you're desperate, these kinds of deals probably look good to many folks. The "choice" they are exercising in taking the deals is no choice at all, in any meaningful sense. The fact that there are investors out there who make money buying up people's settlements -- when those settlements are the result of years of institutional racism and class oppression -- means there are people making serious bank directly BECAUSE poor black folks were poisoned. 

In other words, rich white people (and make no mistake, that's mostly who the investors are, given what we know about the racial demographics of investors generally) are profiting off of black pain. Directly. Not coincidentally. Not passively. Actively profiteering from the destruction of black lives. This is why we have to insist that Black Lives Matter. Because some folks clearly need a reminder.

When you have gestational diabetes your doctor is going to run tests at the beginning but then it is going to be up to you to monitor your own blood sugar on a daily basis.  You will still get the support that you will need but a lot of the process of keeping your blood sugar under control is going to be left in your hands.

This will be done with a glucose monitor.  It is a very quick and simple procedure.  You prick your finger with a lancet using a lancet device.  A lancet is a plastic piece with a pointed metal tip that is put into a pen-like device that is used to draw blood from your finger.  It is relatively painless and with newer monitors there is very little blood that is needed to run the test.

Your monitor will also come with testing strips, a piece of plastic that has a microchip in one and a place to put the droop of blood on the other.  This strip is placed into the monitor, you put the drop of blood from your finger onto the strip and the monitor performs the test.  Different monitors take varying amounts of time but the average is between five and twenty seconds.

When you are first diagnosed with gestational diabetes you will be asked to test your blood sugar seven times in one day.  You will test:

* First thing in the morning before you eat (a fasting test)
* 1 hour after eating breakfast
* Before you eat lunch
* 1 hour after eating lunch
* Before you eat dinner
* 1 hour after eating dinner
* Before going to bed
The more you test the better idea you will have on how well you are managing your diabetes.  It is all the way to determine if you are giving yourself enough insulin.

When your Blood Sugar is Too Low
In a perfect diabetic world, you take your insulin, eat your meals and exercise and your blood glucose levels remain stable.  But things happen, you take your insulin late, you eat a light meal and then spend all afternoon running errands.  This is a recipe for hypoglycemia a condition when your blood glucose levels fall dangerously low.

Hypoglycemia isn't so much a hazard for the baby but it is for a mom with gestational diabetes.  The best way to prevent this from happening is to know the signs and how you feel when you blood sugar is getting low and to carry emergency supplies with you at all times.  

Some of the symptoms of low blood sugar include feeling:

* Hungry
* Nauseous
* Light-headed
* Faint

In the case of any of these symptoms, you should test your blood sugar right away and have something to eat.  The best choice is a glass of juice or another food item that is considered fast-acting such as a piece of fruit or a piece of candy.  Carry something with you at all times and a regular snack too.  If you are out and need to eat (say you are stuck in your car during a traffic jam) it is important to have food with you.

Other precautions that you should take when you have #gestational diabetes include 
carrying a card or another item that identifies you have diabetes and what type of insulin you are taking.  The worse case scenario is you passing out and the people who come to help you need to know that you are diabetic.  Make sure people at work and your family members are aware of your condition and know what warning signs to look for if you need help and when to bring your some juice or something else to eat.

Aside from the morning sickness that many women suffer from in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, you may catch a cold or the flu before your baby is born.  In of itself, this isn't a fun experience but when you have gestational diabetes and are on insulin it is very important that you take extra good care of yourself.

It is important to remember that no matter how you are feeling, you need to take your insulin.  Your body relies on the external source of insulin and needs it to keep 
functioning properly.  But what do you do if you have the flu and are vomiting or don't have any appetite to eat.  As a short term solution, take your insulin and drink a soda that is not diet (you want the sugar in this case).  If you are able to, nibble on crackers or dry toast.  All the while, you need to keep a very close eye on your glucose levels with your monitor.  
 You need to balance the insulin you are taking and the food you are consuming so your blood sugar levels do not drop.  If you are unsure of what to do, contact your doctor.  A better plan is to have this discussion with your doctor before you get sick.  Your health care provider will give you guidelines to follow when you become ill and when you should contact the office or go to the hospital if things are progressively getting worse.

Getting sick is never fun but being pregnant and sick isn't just about you.  You have to still take care of your baby and yourself.  Be aware that when you are sick, your blood sugars may not act as they normally do, test more often to keep track of what the results are.

Male-to-female, or MTF, can be used as another term for trans woman. Whether you are a transgender or genderqueer, physical transition doesn't mean one has to have all of the options of having a physical transition. A trans woman may be straight, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, or even asexual. They wear whatever they want, whether it's feminine, masculine, or androgynous. You live your life however makes you feel happy. There is no "right" or "wrong" way of physically transitioning. You can go with whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Steps


  1. Practice an effort on passing - clothing, manners, and speech (body language is so so important). But just remember to be yourself. Pick the clothes that make you feel comfortable the most. You can train your voice to sound feminine. This can take a lot of time and work to train your voice at a certain pinch. Help with voice therapy is available through some speech therapists who specialize in transgender voice.


  2. Seek a qualified therapist who knows about gender transition. Seeing a therapist is required before you can get hormones and/or surgery, and therapists can also help with gender dysphoria and other issues you experience.
    • After plenty of thought, if you feel you need to pursue to physically transitioning, your therapist will write you a referral letter for an endocrinologist.

  3. The endocrinologist will prescribe a hormone regimen consisting of an estrogen and an anti-androgen.
    • There are many different kinds of medicine and forms, and all can cause severe liver damage if not monitored by a physician. NEVER try to self-medicate without a doctor.

  4. Know all the consequences:
    • You may grow breasts, depending on age and genetics.
    • Your breasts will continue growing in size for possibly the same amount of time for adolescence (i.e. 6-15 years), but not very substantially if you stop taking estros and anti-andros.
    • Stopping maintenance totally within or even after 3-6 month development period can cause bouts of severe and sudden exhaustion, weight gain, hallucinations, and/or uncontrollable erections.

    It will take several hundred hours of painful electrolysis to remove a full beard (at 75-100 dollars per hour). You should begin this early on as it takes many years to complete and also it is a good test of your pain threshold and commitment. If you have pale skin and darker hair, Laser Hair removal can be a cost-effective and less painful alternative, although it technically is not considered permanent hair removal, but hair reduction.

    Laser hair removal can be used on the body if you have dark hair and light skin. This will cost another 100-400 dollars per procedure, depending on how hairy you are and which parts of your body are being cleared of hair.

  9. Read and learn as much as you can before going forward with your plans. Plan financially as well as it may cost upwards of 50,000 - 75,000 dollars to transition [including FFS] plus you may need savings for time between jobs.

  10. Join support groups in your area or online support groups like Trevorspace.org, Lauras-playground.com, Susans.org etc, which will help you get through your transition peacefully and not make you feel like you are the only one transitioning.



Tips and Warnings


  • There will be a period of swelling in your nipples and breast, pain levels vary by individual, make sure you are eating well and are not dieting at the same time to make the best of dosage effects.
  • If you feel ill, consult your doctor.
  • Do not stop HRT unless medically directed to do so, starting and stopping can cause damage to your endocrine system.
  • If you absolutely must self-medicate (which is not recommended, but some poor transgender people do it due to costs), research thoroughly. Seek every nook and corner of this part of the subject.
  • It's never too late to transition. Even if you're an adult, you can still transition and look great.
  • Don't follow what amount of pills they might have taken because everybody is biologically different, we age differently, look differently and act differently, who knows us better than ourselves, so the key is know thy body!

You simply now have a good back - not necessarily a good
life.

Now suppose you were born with this painful back pain. Throughout your entire life you found it almost impossible to function because of the pain associated with this birth defect. You find out you can fix it...but it'll cost you about ten focused years of your life. In that process you'll probably lose a lot of friends & family, most of your money & your subsequent career opportunities will be minimized. 

Is your back ache so miserable that you're willing to go through all this to enjoy a normal life?

It's very important to carefully consider this issue. One big reason? After you fix that back-ache, most of your other life issues, feelings of inadequacy, frustrations...? They're still there. The only thing that's changed is your back no longer hurts.

Bipolar II is related to Bipolar I, but it differs in one major aspect.  While Bipolar I has extreme manic and depressive states, Bipolar II has the deep depression, but never goes into full-blown mania. The highs of bipolar two are called a hypomanic manic episode. Hypomania is essentially a very revved up state of great productivity and quickness.
